Read Baby Read Book Clubs

Help the 5th and 7th grade classes be better readers!

Most of our students come to TEAM Academy reading below grade level, and while they are at TEAM, their reading levels improve at different rates. To jumpstart their reading skills, fifth grade reading is crucial to getting our kids on the right track. We would love to be able to order class sets of all of the books 5th graders read each year. This would allow our kids to read together so that other kids can follow along in the shared reading—helping to develop their fluency and deepen their comprehension and discussions. This will benefit current 5th graders as well as 5th graders in years to come!!

By 7th grade, many of our students have caught up as readers, but other students have only recently come to TEAM or are still working to close the gap: reading levels range from a 2nd grade level through a 9th grade level.  In order to give all of our students what they need, while allowing students to enjoy the types of shared reading experiences and group discussions that we value as adults, we would like to introduce book clubs to students during 7th grade.  Groups of students would be able to select a book at their reading level and would learn to run their own book club independently: deciding what pages to read each night, writing high level questions to discuss as a group, etc.  In order for these book clubs to happen, we need sets of four or five books on a wide range of reading levels. Each year this project will support a new group of 90 students.

About TEAM Schools

TEAM Charter Schools is a network of four KIPP schools in Newark, NJ: SPARK, TEAM, Rise and Newark Collegiate Academy. Our schools are free, open-enrollment, high-performing college-preparatory public schools preparing students in underserved communities for success in college and in life.

TEAM currently serves more than 1,500 students in grades K-2 and 5-12 and will grow to serve 5,000 students in K-12 in the next decade. We are committed to serving the students who need us: 88% of our students receive free or reduced meals, 98% of our students are African American and 2% of our students are Latino. Both our demographics and academic preparedness of our entering students mirror the district. This past year, over 90% of our high school students matriculated to college, and to date, 83% of all our students have gone to college.
